Experts of the «Ernst & Young» (EY) international accounting and consulting company have published their «Freight Transportation Survey in Russia». The study notes that Russian inland rail container traffic grew by 14.3% in 2018 to the results of the year 2017 and reached the level of 4.5 million TEU. In the first quarter of 2019 the trend continued – traffic volume growth amounted to 15.3%. The main market driver is international transportation. For example, in 2018 the volume of transits in rail container traffic increased by 33.5% (up to 557,200 TEU), of exports – by 16.9% (up to 1.1 million TEU), and of imports – by 21.5% (up to 859,800 TEU).
According to EY the major rail container operators in Russia are PJSC «TransContainer» (41%), «Fesco» Transportation Group (11%), and MODUL Co. Ltd (10%); the share of other market participants collectively accounts for 38%.
EY experts estimate that by 2024 the volume of transit rail container traffic will quadruple, and the transit time of container shipments by rail, namely from Far East to the Western border of Russia, will be reduced to 7 days.
In addition to transportation of containerized cargo, the Survey examines key indicators of transportation of coal, oil and oil products, mineral fertilizers, grain cargoes, and also it considers the factors contributing to and constraining the development of the transport industry in Russia as a whole.
